It made me so happy to see this picture! It meant that Eliza and her companion used the mini photo album book I sent with Eliza! It is a fun picture of them doing some type of family history teaching and showing Eliza’s pedigree chart.
My friend, Lynda, told me about these little photo album books. She made the books for her missionary children, and I thought it was such a great idea! I knew I wanted to make something similar when it was time for my own missionaries.
Making these books brought me a lot of joy! I was using my creativity, and sending my missionary off with something useful, plus a little bit of me.
I realize this might not be everyone’s thing to do, but if it is, please check out the images in the post.
Get an inexpensive, thin, 4x6 photo album and get ready to fill it with some helpful goodness! Such as things that will help the missionary teach others AND that will help give the missionary encouragement throughout their mission.
I used to buy these types of album books at the craft store or dollar store, but when making Eliza’s, I resorted to Amazon.
The photo album is small and will fit in the missionary's bag. When the missionary is teaching someone about baptism, for example, there is a picture of when the missionary was baptized to show and share. If someone asks about the temple, I have included a picture of the temple in that mission area with a little write up about when it was announced, dedicated, the address, something from the dedicatory prayer, etc. You get the idea. Here is what I typically include:
• The first page indicates that if the book is lost or stolen to please return it the missionary. Include the missionary's name and email address as well as include the mission address and phone number. This way the missionary will always have the mssion office information too.
• Baptism picture
• A picture at the temple when the missionary received their temple endowment
• A pedigree chart cut in half, so it spreads the two pages. (Missionaries are asked to bring this.)
• Copy of mission call, reduced in size
• Copy of patriarchal blessing, reduced in size
• Picture of the prophet
• A picture of the first presidency and 12 apostles standing in front of the original 12 apostles at the Rome Temple visitors center.
• Picture of the temple in their mission and milestone dates
• Family picture
• Picture of friends
• Setting apart memories typed up
• Shared mission advice from family and friends that have served missions
• A few simple recipe ideas
• Lots of quotes and inspiring words
• Share your favorite scripture(s)
Okay, maybe you’ll need two books. One the missionary can always have with them and another to keep and have at their apartment.
